Why does Tynebikes exist?

Tynebikes' primary objective is to promote better facilities for cyclists in and around Tyneside, UK. We want to encourage cycling because it will lead to:
- safer cities and less congestion for everyone
- less need for new roads and car parks
- cleaner air
- improved health and fitness
- savings on energy and other scarce resources

How long has Tynebikes been around?

Tynebikes began in 1983. Our first campaigns were aimed at Tyne and Wear County Council - abolished in 1986 - and since then at the local councils on Tyneside. Early successes included:

- experimental cycle use of footways on the Tyne bridges
- use of bus lanes by bikes
- cycle parking stands in town centre
- recognition for cycling in statutory and non-statutory plans

But there have been lots of failures too, and some battles rumble on after 25 years!

What does Tynebikes want?

Cyclists must have easy, direct and safe access to shops, jobs, schools and other destinations so that more and more people will be encouraged to use their bikes for everyday transport and for leisure. There must be both a restraint on motor vehicles and an encouragement to cycle.

The less confident need a complete network of signed cycle routes, taking advantage of quiet back streets, off-road cycle tracks and segregated facilities on busier roads. For the more confident cyclists who wish to remain on the road, then we want every road made safer for cyclists.

There must be integration of cycling with public transport, starting with bikes on the Metro!

Tynebikes' constitution

Our constitution can be found here. Our AGM (when we are active) is generally held in February, March or April.
