Cycling in the County of Tyne & Wear

Population (2004): 1,085,600
Households (2001): 462,800

Tyne and Wear no longer exists as an administrative county, except for ceremonial purposes, as the (Labour) County Council was abolished in 1986 alongside the GLC by Margaret Thatcher. However the five districts of Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland (plus Nexus, the Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive) are required by central government to work together on a joint transport plan (the Local Transport Plan or LTP), which covers cycling.

The second version of the LTP - LTP2 - was submitted to central government in May 2006 and Appendix C is a cycling strategy for the county. It is more about principles than detail, but worth a read. The LTP web site is at www.tyneandwearltp.co.uk, but it's a bit out of date as at 13 June 2006 - the version of LTP2 on the site is the draft version, not the submitted one. However ............ the cycling strategy can be downloaded as a pdf file from our site here (please note it is quite a large file - about  2.7mb).
